A useful distinction
A batch of cooked food creates a cooling and storage task as well as a serving task. Leaving that decision until later can make prompt handling harder. A convenient container label does not replace appropriate time and temperature conditions.
Put it into practice
Consult current USDA leftover guidance and FDA handling advice for the food involved. Prepare suitable shallow containers and refrigerator space. FDA advises prompt refrigeration, normally within two hours or one hour above 90°F; do not wait for food to become fully cool on the counter as a general rule.
